FCCF Athlete: Paul A.

“When I first met Paul, I knew he was going to be a perfect fit in the Fern Creek CrossFit Community. He had this “I’m all in” attitude that makes you want to run through a brick wall for the guy. You’d never known that he (much like a lot of us) initially had his reservations about CrossFit. He is the ultimate student of anything he does and CrossFit has been no different. Paul is constantly analyzing the WOD and asking questions to better understand how to get the most “Bang for his buck” out of the workout. Don’t sleep on this guy though, he can cut up with the best of us, and will quickly give you the shirt of his back just because you wanted it. In the brief time he has been at FCCF, he has made tremendous progress towards his fitness goals, and I am excited to see what the future holds for him.”

Q&A with Paul

What inspired you to try CrossFit? How long have you been doing it?

Shermaine got me to try CrossFit, because she used to attend the Knuckleheads gym. I was skeptical about CrossFit, but my personal health habits had to change. Now it’s been 5 months and I am so proud to rep this gym. I’ve become that guy who tells his friends, “Guess what I did in CrossFit today?” Just trying to spread the gospel!

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement?

Burpees, easily.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement?

Deadlifts and rows always feel great, like your full body is getting a great pump. I’ve also enjoyed box jumps, which has taken my vertical from zero to slightly above zero! Ha

Do you have a goal you are working on at the gym?

Big picture, I am working to significantly reduce body fat. I’m aiming for 5% loss every 3 months, with hopes of getting down to 15-20%. My daily goal is simple: just show up.

What is one thing that CrossFit has changed about your life that you never expected it to?

I’d never had the desire or disciple to commit regularly to a fitness class. Doing so has centered my days by planning life around class, which has been very helpful.

Where are you originally from? How long have you lived in Louisville?

I was born in Louisville, raised in Southern Indiana and graduated school in Bardstown. I’m an alumni of Bellarmine University and IU Southeast. Go Knights and Grenadiers!

What do you do for a living? How long have you been doing it?

I am a data analyst for LG&E and KU Energy, working with their business analytics team for 18 months and hopefully many more.

What is the best concert you’ve ever been to?

It’s a tie: Metallica in Columbus, and Kendrick Lamar in Chicago. Both were amazing!

When have you felt your biggest adrenaline rush?

In my mid-twenties I ran 5k’s and 10k’s. Getting that runner’s high during a competitive race was so awesome! Feeling that again is part of my current weight loss motivation.

What job would you be terrible at?

Replacing lightbulbs atop supertall skyscraper spires. No thank you haha!

What are you addicted to?

Recent addictions… gym gains, “The Boys” TV show, beating Shermaine in DragonBall FighterZ, and mastering my pineapple pork adobo dish.

Paul and Shermaine.

Thank you for being a member of the Fern Creek CrossFit family, Paul.
